We’ve all seen what a TEDx talk can do for your career, your credibility, your business, your growth…

And what’s so powerful about a TEDx talk - is that it’s about the purity of the idea. With both good and bad results - many TEDx events are NOT focused on the quality of the speaking (at least at first) - they prioritize the IDEA.

Which means that ANY OF US can get one. So - is it worth it?

In today's episode we talk with TEDx Producers Brian Hart and Erin Perry Borron - about the power of TEDx, and how one of their speakers went from local to global, reaching over 1.6 million viewers.

We really need to know where we are at as speakers. Because when we do, when we can identify what stage we are in, it helps us figure out how to take the next steps in getting better, getting more visible, sharing our stories, stepping into the next phase of growth and impact on behalf of our audience.

And TODAY on the show we’re talking about the stages of your speaking…

TODAY on the show we’re talking about your PRE-PLAN PLAN… That’s right… what you need to do BEFORE you finalize your plan for 2021. BEFORE you say goodbye to 2020 … which, can we just admit? We’re exciiiitteedd about!?! Yes! So ready to see 2020 in the rearview mirror…

But if we don’t first do what I’m bringing my guest (and leadership strategist) Andy Zimney on to talk about today - we’ll miss out on something that might make a huge difference…

Movers, have you ever watched a speaker and could SEE how the words were going straight out of their brain into their mouth, avoiding completely the rest of their body? Those speakers are in their heads instead of in their bodies. We gotta get into our bodies! So, join me for this fun mid-week Dance Party - and as you listen, stand up and dance! Yes, that's right. You might feel dumb, but that's part of the process of becoming better - we gotta embrace the awkward. Who's with me?!

Elizabeth Shaw - the Event Influencer - is an event planner who has produced hundreds of events and inspires all of us to step out front and connect with our audiences through events. We sat down a few months ago to talk about what we can do as speakers in this new virtual world to get hired by event planners -and though the whole of this awesome conversation lives inside Movers-U, I wanted to share a powerful excerpt of it with you here.

In this conversation full of important AHA's, Elizabeth shares with us one thing that you can do as a speaker to get hired - AGAIN. In other words - when we show up and PERFORM, what can we do to ensure that we are a GO-TO speaker for their next event? People buy from people. And your voice is the key to that success… In other words, as speakers, we need to develop our personal brand. So let’s talk to the personal branding expert who has helped the likes of Jon Acuff, Tony Robbins and OPRAH WINFREY!  And Kevin Jennings - my guest today - is that personal branding expert.

Kevin reached out to me a few years ago about working together to help HIM develop his speaking…he said to me - I always help others do their thing, and now I’m ready to work on my own personal branding - using speaking! And so Kevin and I just got done working together in my Signature Talk Studio- that opens again in just a few weeks! Through the STS program it became really clear not only that A) Kevin’s a fantastic speaker and drops wisdom bombs ALL THE TIME,  but also that B) we as speakers need that wisdom.

So - I’m truly thrilled to have Kevin as a part of my community, to coach him as he continues to share his voice with the world.. but also to share him with you.

I got to sit in Rob Bell’s audience for an entire day. It was a day full of connection, insights, mastery… and this weird kind of “magic” that sometimes happens when a speaker is gelling with their audience. So, when it came time for the Q&A, I raised my hand and asked, “Rob, I’’m a speaker coach and I’d love to talk about what’s REALLY going on in here. This thing happening between you and the audience right now… ?“ With a twinkle in his eye (the one he has most of the time!), he said. “Awwww yesssssss….” I knew he would totally ‘get’ it - of course! - as the’s the creator and instigator and believer in just these things. And he delightfully reminded us all of the energy that passes between all of us… That energy? That’s at the heart of our purpose as speakers. It’s ultimately not really about how lovely our content is -it’s about our ability to harness the connection between speaker and audience. Thanks, Rob, for continuing to remind us what’s REALLY going on here.

Sitting in Jason Jaggard's audience or workshops are consistently mind-blowing experiences. I’ve watched Jason live out what he pushes us all to do: to become and do more than we think we can. To live a bigger dream, and to not settle for the easy or mundane… And this creative leadership is so essential for us. To get beyond our own perceived limits and do something that matters. Embracing our own potential as creative leaders is all a part of the journey to become a better speaker.

A few years ago at our neighborhood picnic, I was talking with a neighbor who was new to me, and she said, “You have GOT to audition for this Listen To Your Mother show!”… It sounded fun so I checked it out - and eventually was both in the show - and got to interview the founder of the whole concept: Ann Imig. Ann is a writer and speaker and has empowered people - women in particular - to share their stories. So together, Ann and I took a deep dive into how and why stories are one of the most essential parts of our journey as leaders and speakers.

I’ve admired Brad for years! In his work as the creator of Kid President (yes, THAT kid President!) - he has been a source of joy, inspiration and radical kindness for MILLIONS. When I got to meet Brad in person a few years back, he was as delightful as ever. Like - the most humble, gracious, hilarious and earnest person I’ve ever met. And then he got on stage: he broke all the rules that didn’t work for him, and just so joyfully shared out of love. And that JOY is what I wanted to talk about on the show. In this conversation, Brad shares something that I still aim for each and every day: Instead of saying “I made this, love me” - we create and say, “I made this out of love, for you.”  That difference comes from pure JOY for your work, your purpose, and those you get to serve. Enjoy.

On our journey to become better speakers, we take on all the big ideas: authenticity, connection, risk, etc. etc. etc.... but we can't forget about something that is admittedly less sexy but oh so important. And that is PROCESS. One of the reasons I wanted to highlight this episode is that Jeff Goins - writer, speaker, entrepreneur - is one of the most thoughtful and effortlessly inspirational people I’ve ever talked to.  He is reflective, deep, open, curious - and advocates for us owning our ability to be artists of our own making. He's all about the big ideas, but insists we don't get lost there. The process is in service to all of the art. And that combo is so important in our journey.

Jenny Evans is - I’m just gonna say - a total bad ass boss babe! We’ve known each other a few years, and she embraces RISK in the best of ways. As a resilience coach and fitness expert, she is LIVING IT.  I still remember a moment from our conversation when she talked about wanting to use a trapeze in her talk. A trapeze! How awesome is that?! I love it when people break the rules that don’t work for them, and that’s exactly what Jenny does. She inspires me with her bold - and still grounded - approach. She is somehow down to earth and totally aspirational at the same time. If you want to embrace risk more so you can become a better speaker - you’ve got to check out this conversation.

Angela Lussier - the founder of the Speaker Sisterhood -  is passionate about empowering women to use their voice and step out front with confidence. Several years ago (right after the 2016 election, it turns out), I had invited Angela on to the show and we talked about how - when we own and trust our authentic voices - we trust ourselves to do big things. We wrestled with that word: authenticity. And it’s an idea that we all need to wrestle with in our journey to become a better speaker! I got to see Amena Brown speak at the STORY Gathering a few years back - and its as one of those WOW moments. The journey IS the THERE.

And it is SO TRUE for us as speakers, too: People come to me in such varying stages - some embracing the path opening themselves up to learning and growing and some - resisting the journey wanting to rush to the END, to this idea of THERE…

When in reality - there is no THERE. It is a circular, constant evolution and iteration and growth process.

So I decided help us ALL embrace this journey we’re on by sharing some of my all-time favorite conversations I’ve had about these really essential parts of the journey. The parts that even if we are on board with... we have to always keep working on. Cause the journey IS the there. Over the last four years I’ve talked with some incredible people - some of whom it’s fair to assume you’ve heard of - and others, you likely haven’t. And yet - ALL of these conversations held some AHA moments that will help us walk along in the journey more openly, more thoughtfully - more courageously. I've got 10 episodes for you, re-published favorites here on This Moved Me. And I can't wait for you to hear!

Hey everybody! I’m so excited to be with you today - mid-way through my Signature Talk Studio launch… The cart closes on Thursday so I wanted to address one of the big needs and questions I’m getting about the course…

Like - In the time when so much of our work is done virtually…why would I invest in creating a signature talk? What’s the value of a signature talk when we can’t be live with people for awhile?

Well - besides the fact that event planners are now booking speakers for 2021 (so now is actually the PERFECT time to work on your signature talk!… cause when they opportunity knocks you want to be ready!) -
But there will also be lots of opportunities to share that talk virtually, before 2021 - and after.

According to an April 2020 survey of 1,776 PCMA event planners, 66% have postponed their events – and 7 out of 10 respondents have moved a face-to-face event partially or fully to a virtual platform.
And your signature talk is the core of ALL of your messages that you share - whatever the context. So - having a signature talk prepares you for the eventual live talk as much as it does the virtual one.

But of course - taking your talk virtual does require a little intention.

So I want to share with you some key concepts you need to embrace in order to take your talk virtual.

Here are some of the basic things you need to think about:

#1 - ADJUSTING CONTENT
If you’re shifting your talk to virtual, that means you have to think about what content is NEEDED and what WORKS virtually. Those are two different filters, but you need both in order for your content to work virtually.

For instance - Let’s say you’re a Coach, and work with leaders to help them execute on their goals…
your audience might really NEED for you to talk about the nitty-gritty details of what a good plan and what execution details look like
but what WORKS in a virtual setting might be something more like the going over the FRAMEWORK before diving in. You might be able to get into more details in a live workshop or keynote setting - but when you're virtual, you want to use an even higher bar for what you share, because people’s access

Now - 80% of the time - what you are sharing in a LIVE keynote will work in a VIRTUAL setting. But I really want you to ask yourself - what is NEEDED and what will WORK, virtually?

#2 - ADJUSTING CONTEXT

So this is where you want to think about how you can adjust your space - and create the context through which you are still curating an EXPERIENCE for your audience!

A little intention here goes a long way.
Making sure you can be SEEN, HEARD… and UNDERSTOOD. That your lighting is coming AT you (not from behind you), that you can be heard without too much distraction and that you are making sense and are understood by your audience.

As with a live experience - DISTRACTION is still the bar!
But here’s the real deal…Vs. in the content area, we have to use a really HIGH bar for what makes it into a virtual presentation - in adjusting your context, distraction is a much LOWER bar in a virtual setting. In other words - it’s so easy to get distracted in a virtual setting. To get distracted by how your own face looks in Zoom, or what that one sign says over your shoulder, or the bing of a new email coming in, or that an instagram like or the children coming in the room, or …

OMG -

So the more we can do to FOCUS our people’s attention where we want it to go - the better.

We cannot CONTROL their attention - but we can do what we can to FOCUS it.
Try things like
keeping your background and what your’e wearing simple, so it doesn’t invite in questions or thoughts that take your audience somewhere else… unless, of course, that’s where you want them to go!
Testing your tech and equipment so that doesn’t take the focus away
And being really intuitional about where you want your audience to be looking - and direct their attention there.

#3 - ADJUSTING CONNECTION

The third part is in creating connection with your audience is in ADJUSTING CONNECTION.
There are two ways I want you to think about this:
1 - in CREATING connection, based on how you deliver your talk. With content that resonates…. stories that deliver powerful ideas and really potent insights that your audience NEEDS. That does a lot of work for you in terms of connection!

We also CREATE connection by how we approach with our mindset…by imagining a friendly face beyond the camera, and even if you’re speaking to en empty auditiorium or room, remembering that there are real people watching you right now…you are not just talking to yourself

It’s up to the speaker to reach out beyond the camera to make that connection…

But the other piece is in ASKING FOR connection from your audience. And that is using the tools at your disposal that are particular to virtual engagements!

It’s about using the chat features, polls, CTA buttons
It’s about making your face visible as much as possible, and not hiding behind your slides and screen
It’s about utilizing the parallel ways to communicate! And this opens up all kinds of possibilities!

Turns out - when you’re speaking virtually - your emails before the event are the equivalent to the first moment you step out on stage in a live event…the experience has just expanded outside ’the moment in the room’- it’s now about your materials and your communication outside the event even more so!

With all of this…the bottom line is this: -The heart and core of your signature talk helps you step into these moments having 75% of your work done…
THEN - you have to sort through these filters…
How can I adjust my content for this moment?
How can I adjust the context, and set up my audience for the kind of experience I want them to have?
How can I adjust my strategies for connection - so that my audience can feel my intent, care and purpose?

I have to say…I cannot wait for the crackle and joy and thrill of live events again…but in the meantime, I’m enjoying all of the way sin which we are creatively bringing our voices to our audience in these new ways. It’s beautiful, inspiring - and most importantly - impactful.

SIGNATURE TALK STUDIO:
And if you’re someone who wants to step into these signature talk moments - live or virtual - but you need to create that content! - I’d love for you to join me for the Signature Talk Studio course that closes THURSDAY! Just a few days left to enroll, and I’d of course love for you to come be a part of it.

Really quickly - let me highlight what’s going to be so awesome about this course…because by the end of it, you’ll have a signature talk you can pull out of your back pocket to use in nearly ever context…
Here’s how we’ll get you there:
it’s a step-by-step process from beginning to end… helping you move through creative blocks, stay accountable to a timeline, and also make room for the creative genius to come and fine you when she’s ready (and keep showing up, even when she doesn’t)…
3x we’ll get together for a half-day “studio salon” where we’ll workshop your content and delivery, you’ll get expert feedback from me - and connect with your peers
The course will live on Movers-U this amazing platform where the community ALSO lives… and I have to say? That community in there fills me up each day - with their support, questions, and all the ways in which they’re sharing their voices and making a difference in the world…

I know that most of the people who come to me don’t want to be full-time professional speakers…they want to utilize speaking as the power=house approach to make a bigger impact, and to make their mark. To influence, engage, and be recognized as the thought leader they are.

If that’s you - I’d love for you to come join me! You can learn more at bemoved.com/jointhestudio

Alright, my friends! Next week I’m sharing an AWESOME interview with David Scott who’s a phenomenal speaker and truly knows how to bring the WOW in his delivery! He is a marketing expert and author - and has spoken all over the world from Tony Robbins’ stage to Asia and back again. I loved this conversation, and cannot wait to share it!

Until then - head on over to bemoved.com/jointhestudio to join me in this epic experience!

I’m thinking back on the thrill of getting a request to speak.

Especially when those gigs are a few months away, it feels like you’ve got all the time in the world to create your talk.

A month out - you think - I should work on that - but I still have some time. I’ll get to it… later.  You know, waiting on that brilliant spark of inspiration.

And then suddenly you’re two weeks away, and panic sets in. No brilliant spark of inspiration - just a rock in the gut, realizing you’ve got a lot to do in a little time - and if you want to do this well you probably should have started… YESTERDAY.

The next two weeks are miserable. Stressful. You’re snapping at the people around you, staying up too late, not taking care of yourself (cause you’re doing this ON TOP of everything else…
Why does everything always happen at the same time, you ask yourself?!

And then - the moment comes - and you step out front… and instead of feeling like a rockstar cause you’re totally prepared - you feel scattered, scared, and know this whole thing could have gone better… IF.
  1. If you had something you were working off of, instead of starting from scratch each time.
  2. If you had given yourself more time, and weren’t rushing the process.
  3. If you weren’t trying things out on the audience - and instead had pursued some outside help to get feedback, some guidance… and maybe even some encouragement.

Imagine what having a talk that is DONE and READY and in your back pocket can do…
  1. It can save you time, stress, and all of the pulling out of the hair that seems to always - but doesn’t need to - accompany creating a talk you can be proud of.

We never WANT that, until we’ve just experienced the NEED for it, which is typically after we didn’t do it.
And then we get lulled, once again, into complacency.

Now I’m NOT saying that having a talk in your back pocket means you offer your audience a cookie-cutter approach.
Each talk - each audience- each context - is different.

But instead of starting from scratch - you’re starting from 75% awesome.
You have your core stories - and you’ve developed the key points they make.
You have a WOW beginning, and a solid end. Instead of experimenting every time…you know it works. (Gosh, what a relief!)

This is what it means to have a powerful Signature Talk in your back pocket that you TRUST - that you can lean on - that you’ve worked hard on and that will work hard for you.

So what I want you to do…is I want you move ‘creating your signature talk’ to the top of your to do list.
Maybe you’ve got some extra time on your hands?.. hello, pandemic.
Maybe you’re juggling a million things - and home schooling - AND trying to keep your anxiety at bay…hello pandemic.
Either way - we can move speaking up the list - because we always do what's most important.

If you want to make your mark - be known in your field as a go-to expert - and influence, move and impact your audience (whoever they may be)…then investing time and energy into your talk is one of the most powerful things you can do.

And the good news is that over the next few weeks I’ve got some awesome resources coming your way to help.

#1 - A free masterclass called - the TED Worthy Talk Map that outlines the 5 steps of creating your signature talk so that you can actually HAVE that talk in your back pocket when the moment comes, and you can start to create the demand for your message and yourself as the go-to expert on it. We have a few more dates for this masterclass - and all you have to do is go to bemoved.com/tedworthymasterclass to register

In this masterclass I’ll be sharing the 5 steps in the process of creating your signature talk - which is the exact process and approach they’ve used with my speakers 1:1 over the last 20 years…and now I’m sharing that process with you! My hope is that I can inspire as many of you as possible to create that talk and step into your space and place as a thought leader and change-maker!

And - if you’re someone who’s really ready to dive in, my Signature Talk Studio course opens on THURSDAY!!! And can I just tell you?! I’m so so so so excited…

This is going to be epically awesome -
not only because it gives you a process to walk through the creation process from beginning to end
but in that process are built in bite-sized wins along the way so you know you’re on the right track
and you can finally FINISH that talk feeling proud.

And - because it’s not just a course - but it’s also a community, and coaching. I’ve added three half-day “salons”so we can workshop your stuff, together. <3
It’s gonna be awesome.

When I was in grad school studying persuasion (yes, that’s a thing), I was at this 10-day residency intensive, where we did an incredible deep-dive into our subject areas with the help of these incredible professors and mentors. In those 10 days, we had to create our plan for the semester… and it was INTENSE. And because I’m an ideas person, I had a bajillion of them… Lots of ideas - lots of hard work - but focus? Not so much. My brain would swirl, and I’d start down one path and then question where I was going and then wonder what I was doing and then veer into another direction. Every day I’d show up to my mentor’s office and say “I’ve got it!” I’m going to do this! - … and then I’d spend a day getting inspired by someone’s talk or a discussion with some brilliant professor - and I’d be off in another direction.

Every few days I would freak out and say - I’m not going to get there! I’m not going to figure it out.
And my awesome mentor would say - “Trust the process.”

Kind of like when I was in theater and we’d be putting on shows… and a few weeks from opening i would think - “we’re never going to get there. This is a mess.”

My directors would say - "Trust the process."

I mean - work hard - invest yourself fully - but TRUST.

And we would get there.

When I gave my dream TEDx talk…
There was a moment - about 10 days out from the talk - where I thought…This is horrible. This is the worst. I’m the worst. Do I even know what I’m talking about!? I’m about to crash and burn in this field where I’m supposed to be an expert…
But - I kept at it - moved through it - and got to a place where I was so proud of what I have created.

Believe me, I had to say my own advice back to me a hundred times:
“Trust the process”
“Trust the process”
Trust the process

Because creating a talk is a PROCESS.
You can’t short-cut it, because it’s a process of DISCOVERY, and gaining clarity only comes from working the process.

Here’s how it goes:
We create - we refine - we share - we experience doubts - we push through and share again - and refine again - and create again - we wade through a season of fears and doubts and THEN we experience beloved CLARITY AND AHA’S AND what my husband calls “illumination.”

We can’t get to illumination without the PROCESS.

So - As you bring your talk to life -
in ANY CONTEXT -
virtual, live and in person, through a webinar or keynote or podcast conversation…

You must FIRST go through the process.
And when you’re in those moments of doubt - questioning everything -
"This isn’t working, won’t work, this is dumb, I’m dumb, I hate this…" -
know that as long as you’re working the process - the process is working in you.

Every few weeks I get the question of -

How can I navigate through my fears?
Or - how can I handle my pre-talk jitters?

I love this question, because it owns the reality of our pre-talk jitters, and that we ALL get them…
And let me say - i sure HOPE you’re getting some pre-talk jitters!!! Cause that means you’re about to do something big, and potentially awesome!
Yes, it also means it could be potentially BAD to the same degree but in the opposite direction - but guess what? It doesn’t help to think about that…

So instead - we’re going to talk about ways to get our brain focused - our heart ready - and our bodies strong so that we walk into that moment (or turn on the camera for that moment) - and feel ready to be brave…

I think of my prep in three areas: Body, Mind and Spirit.

BODY: This is a big one because your body is your instrument. And it’s essential that you keep it healthy and ready!

MIND:
This is all about MANAGING your mind.

SPIRIT (HEART): This is about getting your HEART in the right place. Who is this for? Why does this matter? This is about drawing on your purpose, and getting your heart centered on your audience.

I workout in the am.

I get there EARLY/TECH-CHECK.

I am wearing something I feel GREAT in

I WALKNTALK.

I DRINK LOTS OF WATER.

I MANAGE MY MIND and REMEMBER MY PURPOSE

I step out front and ENJOY THE RIDE

What about you? What do YOU do to prep your body/mind/spirit so you can approach each moment with confidence - open to the present moment - and b

This is a little preview into content I share in my Signature Talk Course Studio that opens in a few weeks. We cover content development, delivery tips and tricks - and also mindset and preparation… because having a compelling and powerful talk written that you can deliver well only gets you so far, so we can’t forget about the MINDSET side!

Hey Movers!
On the show this week, I get to share with you one of my awesome speakers, Kate Fitzsimons. She is a youth motivational speaker from Australia - and speaks with teens all over her country about resilience… She is

But then she got the opportunity of a lifetime: the next “bigger” stage, as I like to put it…
and she realized she wanted a little extra help. Didn’t want to leave anything on the table
Didn’t want to get to that moment and feel like she *should have, could have, done more…

When you have a ‘high-stakes’ opportunity - that’s often the point where we say… I need some help. I want to make sure I nail this. I want to feel like I’ve done what I can, I don’t want to leave anything to chance.
So she hired me to help her develop her American talk.

And Kate is one of my most hard-working speakers… gives 110% in everything she does, and it shows. I’m so excited for you to hear about the process of creating her new signature talk…
I thought it would be awesome to also talk with Kate about how she’s taken her talk virtual over the last few months - and what she’s learned along the way. Some good stuff in here, my friends.

Here’s the deal -
This whole thing is a learning process
Creating a talk - you learn a lot
Giving it in each new context - virtual, keynote, TED-type talk, podcast convo… - you learn
The learning isn’t always easy -
but if you really show up - and give it you all - and pay attention to the learnings -
we get better.

Kind of like life.
As Kate and I share in this delightful conversation… Beoming a better speaker truly is the process of becoming a better human.

Hope you enjoy.
Here she is -
Kate Fitzsimons.

Getting our content out of our heads and into our bodies is ESSENTIAL - and it applies to ANY MESSAGE…virtual, in real life, in a keynote, on a webinar, on your IG LIVE video, on that podcast …
DELIVERY is purely how a message lives in your body - and how it is experienced by the Audience.
PS - this is ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT when we’re not in the same room! Because our delivery is the ONLY thing tying people to our content!

Many of us *know* this… are left with HOW we can create more embodied talks and delivery that is present and focused…

Well - it takes time to find it - but I want to share with you one of the key strategies I use to help people take the first step from the script into their bodies - and that’s the Walk and Talk.

I have seen this strategy free people from the confines of memorization - and help them deliver with more authenticity…
help people discover the REAL words behind their scripts
And get out of their heads and into their bodies
allowing them to find a little more self-trust and flexibility in their approach.

This is not the end-all strategy in delivery - it’s part of a PROCESS! And in June I’ll be launching my Signature Talk course, helping you finally create that memorable, powerful, TED-worthy talk that you want to be known for. And in it, I share all of my delivery secrets and the entire process of bringing your talk to life with authenticity…

But before you can step into creating that talk - you have to be crystal clear on what your talk is about…
So, I created this TED Talk Jump-Start Kit. Go to bemoved.com/TEDTALK to access it.

Our audiences are meeting us virtually, which has pushed (and pulled!) many of us out front. And yet - for many people it’s not a comfortable prospect. All of us battle some Imposter Syndrome, and meeting our audiences virtually can be both liberating creatively - and especially daunting.

So - in this time when our visibility is so essential, how can we get more comfortable with getting more visible?

#1 - BeCLEAR about your WHY.
I have been more visible in the last 3 weeks, gotten over myself in some ways because I feel DRIVEN by my PURPOSE.

What’s your WHY?…and what do your people NEED?

Key Question: What are they struggling with right now?

#2 - BeAUTHENTIC. Own YOUR particular expertise. This is not just about your topic - but your TAKE on that topic!

Key Question:
Coming at it in the opposite way: What do you DISAGREE with? What trend in your area of business are you willing to stand up and say - NO to?
As thought leaders - we need to be saying something NEW, and lead people in a NEW direction.

#3 - BeBRAVE
Mantras
The only way is through. Experience creates self-trust.
Embrace vulnerability. Now is a powerful time to just give it a go.

And one of the most powerful ways to help us get more visible is to have our core content to draw from.
So - here’s what I’m doing. I’ve created this awesome resource - the TED Talk Jump-Start Kit -which can help you prepare your core content that you can share in hundreds of ways!
And in it are three things:

1) A 3-minute video training by me with the 1 essential thing you need to know before you create your signature talk
2) A fabulous pdf workbook with some simple prompts to help you pull out the essential stories, pillar ideas and themes that will point you towards your topic
3) a pop-up group in Movers-U that is solely focused on helping you find your topic! This is a FREE and limited-time group and it’s going to be awesome. Weekly Live Q&A’s with me, resources to help support you - and a Mastermind interview from a TED Talk guru with some awesome AHA’s that will be key in your process.

Right now we are focusing on what we need to be ready to create our Signature talk, and offer to the world the ideas that only YOU can offer them.

TED Talks have established a new norm. Because it's such a wildly popular platform, and because thought leaders want to stand on that platform, the expectations around speaking have changed. It cannot be about our business - it has to be about an IDEA. The TED Platform will not entertain talks that feel like selling.

So - what I want to talk about today are three beliefs that you need before you can own the title of TED speaker and thought leader.

1) I belong on this stage.

I belong on THIS stage. I belong on THE platform that so many people all over the world have on their bucket list! Because there's all of these expectations that surround the idea of what a TED Speaker is... it has to do with being "worthy" of it. Ugh.

So - we have to know, deep in our soul - that we are worthy

We don't always start at this point - but the process of developing your talk will walk you to this point.
And though the process is difficult and will put you through a lot to get there -

Even as a presentation coach, the process of me getting my TED talk ready?
I remember at one point suddenly questioning everything I know, wondering if I really belonged up there.

Because it's such a powerful platform, it will call into question your belief in yourself. so we have to start with our belief that you belong up there.

So if you have this little idea in your head, "I want to do a TED Talk" - then that means that somewhere else in your brain is a voice saying "You belong up there." That's the voice we're going to listen to!

2) I don't know everything, but I know this.
Your TED talk is built on significant AHA moments that you have learned and experienced. It can be about a slice or niche that is tiny. You are not expected to know everything; I fact, I think it's powerful to acknowledge that you don't know things - so that when you say 'but I do know this' -

Do you know what you know?
Because this TED talk will help pull this out of you, I promise!

Tiffany spent the last 20+ years being an expert and trusted “facilitator”, teacher and workshop leader - but NOT a speaker. Which is what brought her to me.

Tiffany knew that speaking is good for her business - for her brand - for her movement and for her message. She WANTED to do it. She planned and strategized around it. She worked with a coach. She was thrilled to get the opportunity to step on stage as a keynoter at this big conference. And she was also scared.

“I’m not a speaker” - she said.

What?! You speak all the time!, I said! You lead workshops, and get on Lives and create videos… Why not be a speaker?!

This has been our conversation over the last few years as we’ve worked together -
and finally she had a breakthrough. At one of her recent speaking engagements, she finally felt like a SPEAKER.

How about you!?
Are you ready to BE a speaker?
Are you ready to step through whatever invisible barriers exist that are keeping us from those big stage moments?
So embrace the potential of our power and leadership?

Highlights:
Key mindset shifts that help you shift out of what is holding you back so you can step on stage.
Self Trust: believing ourselves to be worthwhile of this power and moment. We’ve practiced enough so we can be fully present.
How to finally feel confident and step into vulnerability

TMM Moments:
Tiff -
Her son got accepted into an entrepreneurial program he’s been focused on getting into. Reminded her that if we put in the work, good things are indeed happening - even in this time.

Sally -
Watched this beautiful TEDx talk by Louis Schwartzberg about Gratitude. It’s a gorgeous 10-minute reminder about the beauty of life.

Quotes to use in post and social media:
“I believe the world would be a different place if we could all stand into who we are.” - Tiff
“Fear takes us off our game, and makes it hard for us to be at our best.”
“You have to be seen - every day.”
“You want them to get to a place where people want to hang out with you.”
Once you can own your own stories - and share them authentically and vulnerably - you can step into your power on stage.”

Get cozy with your audience.

Time. Do you have an abundance of it all of a sudden?
Or - at least different kinds of time. TIME has freed up in the some incredible ways… and it opens up possibilities for us…

I was on a Zoom call this morning (sound familiar?!), and this amazing entrepreneur I was talking to told me that speaking was "always on the list, but never at the top of it - Until now."
Her business has slowed a bit, and now she has TIME - and she is taking that time to invest in her speaking skills, among other things. <3

I am so delighted in all of the ways people are seeing this time as full of POSSIBILITIES… possibilities are my JAM. They drive me.

Think of all of the things happening right now because of TIME we didn’t have before…
  1. Time with my family.
  2. Time to organize that over-stuffed closet.
  3. Time to master a new skill.
  4. Time to take more walks.
  5. And - I believe - Time to dive into your talks, your video skills, and your speaking.

We don’t know when exactly live events will be coming back online (no pun intended there) - but when they do, you want to be ready.
This is an amazing time to do the thing that is always on your list - but never at the top of it…
NOW is the time to create your signature talk.

So you can say YES to the podcast requests without worry
Seek out that conference opportunity you KNOW you’d offer value to
To help build your brand - grow your audience - and become the thought leader in your space.

Investing time in a core talk now that you can use in hundreds of ways - is powerful not just for your eventual conference talk or TED talk - it’s valuable for EVERY TIME you show up to offer a message, share your story, and LEAD.

QUOTES:
"This is an amazing time to do the thing that is always on your list - but never at the top of it."
"Speaking is always on my list - but never at the top of it. Until now."
"Investing time in a core talk now that you can use in hundreds of ways will help you LEAD in a more powerful way through this crisis, and after it."
"Do this now so you can say YES to the requests that come your way."

HIGHLIGHTS:
  1. Why NOW is the time to invest in your speaking skills and your business messages
  2. How creating your Signature Talk creates demand for your speaking - both in-person and virtually
  3. What you want to 'Be' when we can start bringing our message to live audiences

I was on Zoom with an entrepreneur recently who said -
"You keep saying Signature Talk - and I *think* I know what that means - but I’m not sure."

So let me get clear for you - because whatever we call it - we all need one:

Signature talk - that one idea you’re known for - what no one else can talk about or do like YOU…

Sometimes Signature Talks are in the form of TED Talks -
or Branded talks
or Keynote talks
or get re-purposed in all kinds of ways

in podcast conversations
or Creative Mornings talks
or video messages
in courses
or marketing messages
in webinars and workshops

But it all starts with your Signature Talk. - or you might hear me just short-cut it to call it your TED-Talk. Cause we all get what that is - and the TED talk approach is both what audiences now expect, and many event planners are looking for.

Do you have a Signature Talk?

You cannot speak (well) without fear. And as we take on any new risk, new venture, new challenge  - we want to move through fear so that we can experience FREEDOM in our speaking.

Getting to FREEDOM means we want to act FEARLESS, even though we are afraid.

In this new virtual world - we need to be fearless in a powerful way.
Talking to an empty audience? - Move through your fear - your audience still needs you.
Attempting a Webinar for the first time to share your message? Move through that fear - your audience still needs you.
Trying a totally new approach in your message sharing? Show up, do the work, even when you’re afraid - your audience still needs you.

And on today's on the show I’m talking with Scott Savage - a pastor and frequent guest on This Moved Me - because he brings a passion for the craft of speaking and combines it with his wise and generous spirit. I wanted him to talk about how he’s moved his speaking virtually - and what that means for him - AND, I wanted to talk with him about the skills needed to do these kinds of things - because he himself has moved THROUGH fear. He is experiencing the FREEDOM in his speaking - and it’s inspiring.

What I am hearing from you is that you are moving quickly - thinking of new ways of reaching your audience - and working hard to pivot your message so it’s on context of the NOW, which is soooo important.

So - here are some things I want you to do as you adjust your content to be attuned to the context of NOW.
and this is soooo important because messages work that RESONATE.

If you GET your audience -
feel them
understand the pain, the struggle, the hopes… I think the way forward it clearer.

But let me lay out a few key things that will help.

If you know me at all, you know I LOVE live audiences! I love live events. It’s at the heart and core of what we do.

But we can’t do them right now - and that’s ok.

It really is!

Because there’s power and purpose in video that allows for NEW connections and impact… IF we can embrace and brave video.

So - I want to share with you a few key tips that have helped me do better videos, and speak with more confidence virtually.

Connected and yet disconnected
together – and yet apart
focused and yet so overwhelmed by the world
hopeful about possibilities and yet…afraid.

I am feeling it all, I promise you.
And I know many of you are, too.

Here’s what I want you to know:
Your voice is still needed.
Your message matters, now more than ever.
Your audience still needs you.
And you can do this…

Not only will you get through – but we are going to discover new ways of connection, creation and impact BECAUSE of this.

Not that I’m glad it’s happening, but it is happening. And we are going to focus on loving up our audience – being there WITH THEM and FOR THEM – and we’re going to embrace a new way of connecting and serving.

Tomorrow I’ll be sharing 5 simple tips for your video messages so that you an confidently embrace that art form…. live events will never go away, they’re too special, and I think we’ll learn to appreciate them even more. But this is also a time when we’ll all learn and realize the power of virtual events. They will not go away, either. They may grow and become more popular after this… they are more economical, more viral, faster and easier to pull off and engage people from all over the world…. so these skills are not just about serving you NOW – they are about building on your skills for the future.

In the past week, the world has changed dramatically for many speakers in the United States.

I spoke with one speaker friend who said that in 72 hours she lost 4 months of revenue. Many of my clients' conferences are being delayed or canceled. Many leaders I know are reeling - trying to figure out how to continue to connect, tell their story and have an impact in this world where we cannot be in the same room with our audiences.

And for good reason. I'm all about keeping our distance right now - for the good of all.

So what do we do?  How can we continue to have an impact and make a difference with our messages?

I have been feeling the pain of the community, and want to help. I believe in coming together, focusing on what’s possible, and seeking out joy.

Here's what I am going to do to love you all up, and continue to serve you in the best way I know how:

First - I'm offering a free webinar this Thursday to help us embrace the power of video, find our confidence in that arena, and continue to make connections with our audience - even when we can't seem them.

Sign up here if you want to brush up those skills, or step into them in a new way.

Secondly, I want to share YOU. Your ideas, your messages, your voice.

Join in the #BeSupported movement. Email me, tag @BeMovedSpeaking on Instagram, or just send a quick DM. Whatever works. Share with me a bit about you and your message - and I'll share your awesomeness with my audience. We can support each other, discover awesome humans, and perhaps even grow our reach and audience during a time when it can feel like we are cut off from them.

Follow along over at @BeMovedSpeaking to share in the love fest. <3

And lastly - I'm making my Movers-U community free and open to anyone who wants in on it. We need a space where we can connect, problem-solve, commune - and, when we're ready, dive in and continue to grow. In community. With support.

It is my honor to walk with you as you journey forward from this crazy moment in time.

Much love and hugs.

We got this, and I got you.

I am so thrilled to have Julian back on the show to talk about how we can tune into our audiences, listen to what they're telling us - and speak so that people will listen. Enjoy!

Travis Thomas from Live Yes, And holds a wide array of identities... improvisor, leadership coach, personal development guru, teacher, social entrepreneur - and of course, speaker.

In fact - speaking is where all these ideas blend together and come to life!

In this week's episode, Travis and I have a pretty 'meta' conversation about the ideas of improv - and how we can not only USE them in our speaking to help bring our ideas to life - but how we NEED them as speakers and entrepreneurs.

I'm so thrilled to jump back into some awesome interview episodes to share with you that are FULL of some speaking goodies.
Starting with Mike Parkinson, a fellow Presentation Summit presenter, keynote speaker and presentation designer. He is a GEM of a human who brings so much energy and love for his audience up in front with him. So, I wanted to talk with him about how we can love up our audiences, even when it seems they might not be loving us back. Take a listen!

Risk is an essential part of speaking. It engages the audience, and pushes us BOTH to new heights. To begin to take more risks in our speaking, we’ve got to first do this:

About a week ago, I got to see Oprah in action. #DREAMCOMETRUE.

And today is MLK day. A day I cannot let go by without paying homage to his mission, his words - and his ability to lead and create needed change.

These two amazing humans are very different leaders in their own right. And sitting in Oprah's audience I had a big AHA about what real leadership looks like - and what our audiences need from us.

So - check out this week's episode to hear more about what MLK and Oprah can teach us as we bring our messages out into the world more this year!

Over and over again, I hear even my experienced speakers say things to me like… Thanks for the nudge, I need to get out there more. And - I have been quieter than I want, I need to speak up. And - I have been struggling with some self-doubt, thanks for the encouragement.

And part of what I LOVE to do, is help people take bigger LEAPS in their speaking. To not think small, think big. To move beyond the expected, to tell the story you’ve been secretly working on but aren’t sure you can share....

In 2020 - We will take bigger leaps TOGETHER!
And we'll start with this 4-part series on what Leaping in our Speaking really means.
ARE YOU READY?!
